What is
The ECO4 Scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, established by both the UK and Scottish Governments, is dedicated to providing free energy-saving measures to individuals with low incomes or residing in vulnerable households. The latest iteration, ECO4, aims to enhance the energy efficiency of these households, rendering them warmer while curbing emissions.

As the UK endeavors to achieve its net-zero target by 2050, it is imperative for the government to ensure that all citizens have access to means for reducing household emissions. The initial step in this endeavor involves promoting judicious and efficient use of fossil fuels within homes. This can be facilitated through various home improvements such as the installation of free loft insulation, solid wall insulation, room-in-roof insulation, and other measures.

However, those on a low income or who are vulnerable often do not have the means to fund these improvements themselves. To ensure that the transition to a greener future is fair and accessible, the government introduced the ECO4 scheme across England, Scotland and Wales.

The scheme is funded by medium and larger energy suppliers across the UK, hence the name “Energy Company Obligation“. Set to run from 2023 to 2026, the ECO4 grant has budgeted around £4 billion to make energy efficiency improvements to roughly 300,000 UK homes that are considered to be at risk of fuel poverty.

To receive this funding, you first need to determine whether you fit the required eligibility criteria.

Alternatively, you could also qualify to receive funding if you live in social housing that has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F or G.

What Are The Benefits Of Eco-Friendly Insulation?

Eco-friendly insulation can offer several advantages. These benefit not only the homeowner (or tenants) but the environment, too.

Here are some of the main benefits of using eco-friendly insulation materials:

  • Energy efficiency: Eco-friendly insulation materials like recycled cellulose, wool, or other natural fibres, have fantastic thermal properties. They are effective in regulating indoor temperatures, which ultimately reduces the need for heating and cooling systems within your home. In turn, this leads to less energy consumption and lower heating bills.

  • Reduced environmental impact: Usually, eco-friendly materials for insulation are made from renewable or recycled materials. Using these materials can help to divert waste away from landfills and lessen the demand for virgin resources. This lowers the carbon footprint that is typically associated with insulation manufacturing.

  • Improved indoor air quality: Many traditional insulation materials tend to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals into the air. Eco-friendly options are usually free from synthetic chemicals and additives, which contributes to healthier indoor air quality.

  • Sustainability: Most eco-friendly insulating material is renewable and sustainable. For example, cellulose, hemp, and wool can be grown or manufactured with fewer resources compared to standard insulation options.

  • Durability: Some eco-friendly insulation materials have a longer lifespan in comparison with traditional materials. A good example of this is wool insulation is known for its durability and resistance to degradation over time.

  • Noise reduction: Having insulation of any kind in your home can help to reduce noise from outside or between walls of your home.

  • Moisture regulation: Certain natural insulation materials have the ability to absorb and release moisture. This can help to regulate indoor humidity levels and prevent mould growth inside your home.

  • Resale value: Having eco-friendly insulation in a home can sometimes be an attractive feature for potential buyers if you’re selling your home.

  • Incentives and rebates: In some regions, using eco-friendly materials may make homeowners eligible for energy efficiency incentives, tax credits, or rebates.
