What is
The ECO4 Scheme?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) initiative, established by the UK and Scottish Governments, serves to offer complimentary energy-saving enhancements to individuals with low incomes or residing in vulnerable households. The latest version, ECO4, strives to enhance the energy efficiency of these homes, enhancing warmth while curbing emissions.

To achieve the UK’s net-zero target by 2050, the government must ensure universal access to household emission reduction measures. The initial stride in this endeavor involves promoting judicious and effective use of fossil fuels in homes. This can encompass various home enhancements such as the provision of free loft insulation, solid wall insulation, and room-in-roof insulation, among other measures.

However, individuals with low incomes or those who are vulnerable often lack the financial resources to undertake such improvements on their own. In order to ensure that the transition to a more environmentally sustainable future is equitable and accessible, the government has implemented the ECO4 scheme across England, Scotland, and Wales.

This initiative is financed by medium and large energy suppliers throughout the UK, hence its designation as the “Energy Company Obligation.” Scheduled to operate from 2023 to 2026, the ECO4 program has allocated approximately £4 billion to facilitate energy efficiency enhancements for an estimated 300,000 homes in the UK deemed to be at risk of fuel poverty.

To access this funding, individuals must first ascertain whether they meet the specified eligibility

Do I Qualify
For Free Insulation
Through The ECO4 Scheme?

Determining whether or not you are eligible to receive ECO4 funding is the first step in making your home more environmentally friendly and energy efficient.

To be eligible for the ECO4 scheme, you must meet specific criteria. This includes either owning and residing in the property for which you’re seeking funding, or living in privately rented housing. Additionally, you must be receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Child Benefit
  • Tax Credits (Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits)
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Mobility Supplement
  • Severe Disablement Allowance

  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

Note: The recipient of the qualifying benefit can be anyone who lives in the energy inefficient house that will benefit from the improvements. This includes grandparents and parents, a disabled child, or a spouse.

Alternatively, you could also qualify to receive funding if you live in social housing that has an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D, E, F or G.

What Are The Benefits Of Eco-Friendly Insulation?

Eco-friendly insulation presents numerous advantages, benefiting both homeowners (or tenants) and the environment alike. Below are the primary advantages of employing eco-friendly insulation materials:

  • Enhanced Energy Efficiency: Insulation materials like recycled cellulose, wool, or other natural fibers possess excellent thermal properties, effectively regulating indoor temperatures. This results in decreased reliance on heating and cooling systems, leading to lower energy consumption and reduced heating bills.

  • Minimized Environmental Impact: Typically derived from renewable or recycled sources, eco-friendly insulation materials help divert waste from landfills and decrease the demand for virgin resources. This mitigates the carbon footprint associated with insulation manufacturing.

  • Improved Indoor Air Quality: Unlike many traditional insulation materials that emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other harmful chemicals, eco-friendly options are devoid of synthetic additives, contributing to healthier indoor air quality.

  • Sustainability: Most eco-friendly insulation materials are renewable and sustainable. For instance, cellulose, hemp, and wool can be cultivated or manufactured with fewer resources compared to conventional insulation options.

  • Enhanced Durability: Certain eco-friendly insulation materials boast longer lifespans than their traditional counterparts. Wool insulation, for example, is renowned for its durability and resistance to degradation over time.

  • Noise Reduction: Any form of insulation in a home aids in reducing external noise or sound transmission between walls.

  • Moisture Regulation: Specific natural insulation materials possess moisture absorption and release capabilities, helping regulate indoor humidity levels and thwart mold growth.

  • Increased Resale Value: The presence of eco-friendly insulation can be an appealing feature for potential buyers when selling a home.

  • Incentives and Rebates: In several regions, utilizing eco-friendly materials may render homeowners eligible for energy efficiency incentives, tax credits, or rebates.

Beyond the provision of complimentary insulation, the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme offers various other energy-saving solutions. Leveraging multiple measures can significantly amplify your capacity to mitigate energy costs. These options encompass:

  • Solar PV
  • Electric storage heater upgrade
  • First-time central heating
  • Non-condensing gas boiler upgrade

To apply for one of the ECO4 free grants, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Go to Envirohomes Renewables’s website.

  2. Fill out the Check Eligibility form or contact the team on 0141 459 0292 to determine whether you qualify to receive funding under this scheme.

  3. Should you fit the grant criteria, Envirohomes will be in contact with you to help submit your ECO4 grant application.

  4. One of our scheme-approved surveyors will come to inspect your property to assess what type of heating system or insulation measures you already have installed.

  5. The surveyor will then put together some recommendations of what energy-efficient measures would be best suited to your home and specific needs.

  6. Envirohomes Renewables will then carry out the necessary installation process.

  7. Upon completion, you will be able to reap the benefits of reduced carbon emissions and lower energy bills.

Insulation is indispensable for homes in Pumps Islay. According to the Energy Saving Trust, inadequate insulation can result in up to 45% heat loss within your home. This shortfall necessitates constant adjustment of central heating, leading to elevated monthly energy expenses.
