Introduced by the UK government, the ECO4 scheme aims to improve energy efficiency in homes by offering free home improvements such as heat pumps and insulation. Targeting low-income households and rural homes, ECO4 aligns with the country’s carbon-neutral goals and is set to run until March 31, 2026.

What makes ECO4 different from ECO3?

The ECO4 and ECO3 initiatives, while sharing similar foundations, diverge significantly in various aspects:

What is
Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heating utilizes electricity to generate heat during off-peak hours, typically overnight when electricity rates are lower. These heating systems then release the stored heat during the day when it’s needed, operating as follows:

How electric storage heaters work?

In the Highlands, electric storage heaters are an efficient method for heating homes, utilizing the principle of storing energy during periods when electricity is less expensive and demand on the national grid is lower. Here’s how they operate:

  1. Off-peak charging: During off-peak hours, electric storage heaters draw electricity from the national grid and store it. The electricity heats up the core material, often composed of ceramic bricks or other heat-retaining materials inside the heaters.
  2. Heat retention: The heated material retains the heat for extended periods, releasing it as needed within the home.
  3. Controlled Heat release: As ambient temperatures drop or occupants require more warmth during the day, the stored heat gradually releases from the heater.
  4. Thermostat control: Most modern electric storage heaters feature a thermostat to regulate the heat release, enabling residents to warm their homes adequately while conserving excess electricity and reducing heating bills.
  5. Economy 7/ Time-of-use tariffs: Electric storage heaters often complement special electricity tariffs like ‘Economy 7,’ offering lower rates during off-peak hours to encourage electricity consumption when demand is lower.

What are the Advantages of Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heaters present a range of advantages for homeowners, making them an attractive option for efficient and effective home heating. Here are some key benefits of choosing electric storage heating for your property:

  • Cost-effectiveness: Taking advantage of off-peak electricity rates can significantly reduce energy bills by storing heat when electricity is cheaper and releasing it during the day.
  • Energy efficiency: Properly used electric storage heaters can lower constant energy consumption, resulting in lower monthly bills
  • Gas free homes Ideal for homes without access to gas lines or for homeowners who prefer gas-free appliances
  • Ease of installation: For homes without gas connectivity or for those preferring to avoid gas, electric storage heaters are an ideal solution, requiring only an electric connection to function.
  • Low maintenance: With fewer moving parts than traditional heating systems, electric storage heaters require less maintenance, reducing the likelihood of breakdowns and repair costs.
  • Environmentally-friendly: If sourced from a provider using renewable energy, electric storage heaters can help decrease your home’s carbon emissions, contrasting with fossil fuel-dependent heating systems
  • No boiler required: Eliminating the necessity for a boiler, electric storage heaters avoid the high initial costs associated with boiler-based central heating systems, ideal for homes without existing central heating.

The time required for energy improvements varies depending on factors such as the type and complexity of measures, property size, layout, and environmental considerations. Some improvements may take only a few hours to a day, while others may require several days to weeks for completion.

Subject to meeting the eligibility criteria, the ECO4 grant covers various energy-efficient measures, including free boilers, solar panels, air source heat pumps, and home insulation (such as loft, roof, and cavity wall insulation), as well as draught-proofing.
