Our team of electric heating engineers specializes in ECO 4 grants, providing a fully funded service to households on benefits. Read on to understand the qualification process and the benefits of the ECO4 scheme.

The ECO4 scheme, a UK government initiative introduced in April 2022, aims to enhance energy efficiency in homes by providing free heat pumps and insulation. Specifically designed to assist low-income households and rural homes, ECO4 aligns with the nation’s carbon-neutral objectives. Running until March 31, 2026, ECO4 is integral to the government’s long-term plan for sustainable housing by 2035, focusing on improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in vulnerable households.

What makes ECO4 different from ECO3?

While ECO4 and its predecessor, ECO3, share foundational principles, they diverge in several key aspects:

What is
Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heating is a heating system that utilizes electricity to generate heat during off-peak hours, typically overnight when electricity rates are lower. These systems store the generated heat and release it during the day when needed. They are often designed to take advantage of time-of-use electricity tariffs, making them more energy-efficient and cost-effective compared to other heating systems.

How electric storage heaters work?

To give you an illustration of how electric storage heaters work, we’ve created a simple step-by-step guide on the process they use:

  1. Off-peak charging: During off-peak hours, usually at night, electric storage heaters draw electricity from the national grid and store it. The electricity is used to heat up the core material, such as ceramic bricks or other heat-retaining materials inside the heaters.
  2. Heat retention: Once the core material is sufficiently heated, it has the remarkable ability to retain heat for extended periods. This stored heat remains dormant until required, ensuring a steady and consistent warmth within the home.
  3. Heat release: As the ambient temperature drops throughout the day or occupants require additional warmth, the stored heat is gradually released from the heaters, maintaining a comfortable indoor climate.
  4. Thermostat control: Most modern electric storage heaters come with a thermostat to regulate the amount of heat released. This helps residents maintain optimal indoor temperatures while saving excess electricity and reducing heating bills.
  5. Economy 7/ Time-of-use tariffs: Electric storage heaters are often paired with special electricity tariffs like Economy 7, offering lower electricity rates during off-peak hours and higher rates during daytime hours. This encourages users to consume electricity when demand is lower, resulting in cost savings

Who Qualifies For Free Electric Storage Heating In Scotland?

To be eligible for free electric storage heaters under the ECO4 scheme in Scotland, you must meet specific criteria:

Grant eligibility

    • You must be a homeowner or renting from a private landlord with their permission.
    • At least one resident of your household must meet the following criteria:
      • The combined household income is less than £31,000 per year.
      • A child under the age of five resides in the house.
      • One household member is over 65 years old and is vulnerable or suffers from certain health conditions.
    • The household must reside in an area vulnerable to cold living conditions.
    • For homeowners, the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating should be D, E, F, or G. Renters must have an EPC rating of E, F, or G to qualify.
    • Grant funding is typically prioritized for homes with inefficient energy heating systems or poor cavity wall insulation.

Qualifying allowances

  • JSA:
    Income-based Job-Seekers Allowance
  • ESA:
    Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

Qualifying benefits

  • Housing benefit
  • Child benefit

Qualifying credits

  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Working Tax Credits (WTC)

What if you don't qualify for grant funding?

If you don’t receive any of the above benefits but you still meet certain criteria for grant funding, you may be eligible for the Government ECO Scheme through some ECO4 Flex options. This includes options for energy efficiency improvements like a replacement gas boiler, a first-time central heating grant, an insulation grant, or an electric heater grant.

What are the Advantages of Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heaters offer a ton of advantages for you and your home. Some of the main benefits of installing electric storage heating in your home include:

  • Cost-effectiveness: Take advantage of off-peak electricity rates to reduce energy bills.
  • Energy efficiency: When they are used correctly, electric storage heaters are great for energy efficiency. By storing and slowly releasing heat, they reduce the need for constant energy consumption (which, again, is beneficial for lowering the cost of your monthly energy bills).
  • No gas required: Electric storage heaters don’t require any gas to operate, making them a great choice for homes that don’t have access to gas lines. They’re also a good option for homeowners who prefer not to use gas appliances.
  • Simple installation: The installation of electric storage heaters is relatively straightforward, especially if you already have an electricity supply.
  • Low maintenance: Electric storage heaters have fewer moving parts compared to more traditional heating systems. This means they need less maintenance and there are fewer points of failure for something to go wrong.
  • Reduced carbon emissions: If your electricity provider generates electricity from renewable sources, using electric storage heaters can help to reduce your carbon footprint. This is in direct comparison with other heating systems that rely on the use of fossil fuels.
  • No boiler required: Electric storage heaters don’t require a boiler, which is usually the cause of high upfront installation costs. This can be particularly helpful if your home doesn’t have any existing central heating.

The time required depends on the type and complexity of the measures, property size, layout, and environmental factors. Some improvements may take a few hours to a day, while others may take several days to weeks.

The ECO4 grant may cover free boilers, solar panels, air source heat pumps, and home insulation, including loft, roof, cavity wall insulation, and draught-proofing. Check your eligibility online or contact us for assistance with the application process.
