Our team of electric heating engineers specialises in ECO 4 grants which provide a fully funded service to households on benefits. Please see the qualification process below.

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme is a UK government initiative that is aimed at improving energy efficiency in homes by offering home improvements like free heat pumps and insulation. This is to help low-income households and rural homes, as well as boost the country’s carbon-neutral goals.

ECO4 is the latest phase in the ECO programme and was introduced in April 2022. It is set to run until March 31, 2026, and is part of the government’s long-term plan for increased sustainability in homes by 2035.

ECO4 is focused on providing energy-efficient measures to vulnerable households to create more sustainable homes with improved energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. Ultimately, this will help to advance the plan for long-term sustainability.

What makes ECO4 different from ECO3?

The ECO4 and ECO3 schemes share similar principles, but there are some important differences that set them apart. These differences include:

What is
Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heaters are innovative heating solutions that leverage electricity to warm up homes outside of peak energy demand times, typically throughout the night when electricity costs are at their lowest. These devices store thermal energy during these hours and release it as needed throughout the day to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures.

Designed to optimize the use of lower-cost, off-peak electricity tariffs, electric storage heaters are an ideal choice for regions where alternative heating options might be less feasible or where energy conservation is a priority. Their efficiency not only aids in reducing household energy expenditures but also contributes to a more environmentally friendly heating method.

Here’s a breakdown of how electric storage heaters operate:

How electric storage heaters work?

To give you an illustration of how electric storage heaters work, we’ve created a simple step-by-step guide on the process they use:

  1. Off-peak charging: At night, when electricity usage decreases and rates drop, electric storage heaters begin absorbing power from the grid. This energy heats up dense, heat-retaining components within the heater, such as ceramic bricks.
  2. Heat retention: These materials are designed to hold onto the heat for extended periods, ensuring that the warmth is preserved until it’s needed within your living space.
  3. Heat release: As the day progresses and either the temperature dips or there’s a demand for heating, the stored heat gradually disperses into the room.
  4. Thermostat control: Contemporary models of electric storage heaters include thermostats, allowing users to adjust the heat release to maintain comfortable temperatures efficiently, thus avoiding unnecessary energy use and cost.
  5. Economy 7/ Time-of-use tariffs: These heaters are often paired with ‘Economy 7’ or similar time-of-use tariffs, offering cheaper rates during the night and higher rates during peak hours, promoting energy consumption when it’s most cost-effective.

Who Qualifies For Free Electric Storage Heating In Scotland?

In Scotland, you’ll need to meet certain qualifying criteria to be eligible for free electric storage heaters and systems under the ECO4 scheme. These eligible households and individuals include:

Grant eligibility

  • You’re a homeowner or you’re renting from a private landlord (and have gotten the landlord’s permission).

  • If at least one resident of your household meets the following criteria:
    • Low-income households where the combined household income is less than £31,000 per year.
    • A child under the age of five years old resides in the house.
    • One of the household members is over 65 years old and is also vulnerable or suffers from certain health conditions.

  • The household lives in an area that is vulnerable to cold living conditions.

  • Your current Energy Performance Certificate or EPC rating is D, E, F, or G (this only applies to homeowners). If you’re renting, your EPC rating should be E, F, or G to quality.

  • Grant funding is usually given to homes with inefficient energy heating systems or that have poor cavity wall insulation.

Note: It’s important to remember that all homes are required to undergo an assessment to determine whether they meet the qualifying criteria.

Qualifying allowances

  • JSA:
    Income-based Job-Seekers Allowance
  • ESA:
    Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

Qualifying benefits

  • Housing benefit
  • Child benefit

Qualifying credits

  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Working Tax Credits (WTC)

What if you don't qualify for grant funding?

If you don’t receive any of the above benefits but you still meet certain criteria for grant funding, you may be eligible for the Government ECO Scheme through some ECO4 Flex options. This includes options for energy efficiency improvements like a replacement gas boiler, a first-time central heating grant, an insulation grant, or an electric heater grant.

What are the Advantages of Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heating systems come with numerous benefits, enhancing comfort and efficiency in your home. Here are the key advantages of opting for electric storage heating:

  • Cost-effectiveness: These heaters are notably cost-effective, potentially lowering your energy expenses by utilizing lower off-peak electricity rates. They charge up overnight when electricity is less expensive and release warmth throughout the day.
  • Energy efficiency: Properly utilized, electric storage heaters excel in energy efficiency. The process of storing and gradually dispensing heat minimizes continuous energy use, favorably impacting your monthly bills.
  • No gas required: Properly utilized, electric storage heaters excel in energy efficiency. The process of storing and gradually dispensing heat minimizes continuous energy use, favorably impacting your monthly bills.
  • Simple installation: Setting up these heaters is uncomplicated, provided there’s an existing electrical setup, making them a straightforward addition to your home.
  • Low maintenance: Thanks to fewer mechanical components than traditional heating systems, electric storage heaters require less upkeep, reducing the likelihood of malfunctions.
  • Reduced carbon emissions: Leveraging electricity from renewable sources for your heating needs can significantly cut down your carbon emissions, offering an eco-friendlier solution compared to fossil fuel-based systems.
  • No boiler required: Eliminating the boiler from your heating system not only cuts initial costs but also simplifies the overall setup, especially beneficial for homes without pre-existing central heating.

The timeframe for executing energy efficiency enhancements varies, influenced by the specific measures, property size, layout, and additional factors. While some upgrades might be completed within hours to a day, others, like installing ground-source heat pumps or solid wall insulation, could extend over several days to weeks.

Eligibility for the ECO4 grant could entitle you to various home improvements at no cost, including boilers, solar panels, air source heat pumps, and comprehensive home insulation (loft, roof, and cavity wall). Start by verifying your eligibility through Envirohomes Renewables’ online tool or by contacting us directly for guidance. We’re here to assist you through every step of the ECO4 grant application, ensuring you maximize the benefits of this program.
