Our team’s specialization in ECO 4 grants demonstrates our commitment to providing fully funded services to households eligible for benefits. The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, an initiative led by the UK government, focuses on improving energy efficiency in homes. Its primary goal is to assist low-income and rural households, supporting the UK’s ambitious carbon-neutral objectives. Launched in April 2022 and planned to run until March 31, 2026, ECO4 is a vital part of the government’s long-term strategy for sustainable home energy solutions, targeting the year 2035.

What makes ECO4 different from ECO3?

While ECO4 and ECO3 are rooted in similar principles, there are distinct differences that set ECO4 apart:

What is
Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heating is a revolutionary system that uses electricity generated during off-peak hours, usually at night when rates are lower. This heat is then stored and released as needed during the day. These systems are particularly beneficial in areas where alternative heating sources are limited. Designed to leverage time-of-use electricity tariffs, they offer a more energy-efficient and cost-effective solution for heating.

How electric storage heaters work?

To understand how electric storage heaters function, here’s a quick breakdown:

  1. Off-peak charging: These heaters draw electricity from the grid during off-peak hours, using it to heat up core materials like ceramic bricks known for their heat retention properties.
  2. Heat retention: Once heated, these materials can store the heat for extended periods, ensuring it is retained until required.
  3. Heat release: The stored heat is gradually released based on the ambient temperature and heating needs within the home.
  4. Thermostat control: Modern units are equipped with thermostats, allowing for efficient temperature regulation.
  5. Economy 7/ Time-of-use tariffs: These heaters are often paired with specific tariffs that offer lower rates during off-peak hours

Who Qualifies For Free Electric Storage Heating In Scotland?

In Scotland, you’ll need to meet certain qualifying criteria to be eligible for free electric storage heaters and systems under the ECO4 scheme. These eligible households and individuals include:

Grant eligibility

Eligibility for certain grants is available to you if you are either a homeowner or renting with permission from a private landlord. To qualify, any of the following conditions should be met within your household:

  • The combined annual income of the household is below £31,000.
  • There is a child under five years of age living in the home.
  • A member of the household is over 65 years old and is either vulnerable or has specific health conditions.
  • The home is situated in an area known for being prone to cold conditions.

For homeowners, the property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating must be between D and G. For tenants, the required EPC rating is E, F, or G. Typically, preference for grant funding is given to homes that either have inefficient energy heating systems or lack adequate cavity wall insulation.

It’s crucial to note that an assessment is required for all homes to confirm if they meet these eligibility criteria.

Qualifying allowances

  • JSA:
    Income-based Job-Seekers Allowance
  • ESA:
    Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

Qualifying benefits

  • Housing benefit
  • Child benefit

Qualifying credits

  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Working Tax Credits (WTC)

What if you don't qualify for grant funding?

Those not qualifying for the above benefits but meeting other criteria can access the Government ECO Scheme through ECO4 Flex options. This includes energy efficiency improvements such as gas boiler replacements, first-time central heating grants, insulation grants, and electric heater grants.

What are the Advantages of Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heaters bring numerous advantages to residences in Edinburgh, aligning with the city’s sustainable energy goals. Key benefits of integrating electric storage heating into your Edinburgh home include:

  • Cost-effectiveness: These heaters are particularly economical, leveraging off-peak electricity rates. They store heat when it’s cheaper during off-peak hours and release it as needed throughout the day, leading to noticeable savings on energy bills.
  • Energy efficiency: Electric storage heaters are excellent at conserving energy. By accumulating heat and gradually releasing it, they significantly reduce the need for continuous power use, which can lower your monthly energy expenses.
  • No gas reliance: These heaters operate on electricity alone, making them an ideal choice for homes in Edinburgh that lack gas line access or for those preferring to avoid gas appliances.
  • Simple installation:  Installing electric storage heaters is generally straightforward, particularly if your property already has an electric supply, ensuring hassle-free integration into your home..
  • Minimal maintenance requirements: Compared to traditional heating systems, electric storage heaters have fewer mechanical components, translating into lower maintenance needs and reduced risk of breakdowns
  • Reduced carbon footprint: If your electricity is sourced from renewable energy, using electric storage heaters contributes to a smaller carbon footprint, in contrast to heating systems that rely on fossil fuels.
  • No boiler required: These heaters eliminate the need for a boiler, which is often associated with high initial costs, making them a cost-effective option for homes without existing central heating.

The time required to implement energy improvements in a home depends on the type and complexity of the measures that are taken. It may also depend on the size of the property, the layout, and other environmental factors.

While some energy improvements may take a few hours to a day to complete, others may take several days to weeks to complete.

For example, installing ground-source heat pumps is a more complex task and will require more time to install and get up and running than air-source heat pumps. Similarly, cavity wall insulation may take around two days to complete, while solid wall insulation can take several days to weeks.

Provided you meet the relevant criteria, you could be eligible for the following under the ECO4 grant: free boilers, solar panels, air source heat pumps and home insulation, which includes loft, roof and cavity wall insulation as well as draught-proofing.

If you are interested in one of these ECO4 grants, you will first need to assess your eligibility.
