The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme, an initiative by the UK government, focuses on elevating residential energy efficiency through home upgrades like complimentary heat pumps and insulation. This scheme is particularly beneficial for low-income and rural households, aligning with the country’s goals for achieving carbon neutrality.

Launched in April 2022 and set to continue until March 31, 2026, ECO4 is an integral part of the government’s broader strategy for enhancing sustainability in homes by 2035. Its primary focus is on equipping vulnerable households with energy-efficient measures to foster sustainable living, improved energy efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions.

What makes ECO4 different from ECO3?

ECO4 and ECO3, though sharing foundational goals, differ in several critical aspects:

What is
Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heating systems utilize electricity to produce heat during times when electricity is less costly, typically overnight. This method allows for efficient energy use, as these heaters charge up when demand is low and rates are lower. They then release this accumulated heat during the day as needed.

These heating systems are specially designed to benefit from time-of-use electricity tariffs and are particularly useful in locations where alternative heating sources may not be as feasible. Opting for electric storage heaters can lead to significant savings on energy bills due to their higher energy efficiency compared to other heating methods

How electric storage heaters work?

To give you an illustration of how electric storage heaters work, we’ve created a simple step-by-step guide on the process they use:

  1. Off-peak charging: Electric storage heaters capitalize on lower electricity demand during off-peak hours, usually at night. During this time, they draw electricity from the grid and store it. The energy is then used to heat a core material within the heaters, often composed of ceramic bricks or similar substances that retain heat well.
  2. Heat retention: After the core material is heated, it has the ability to maintain this heat for extended durations. This stored heat remains in the heater, ready to be used when required in the home.
  3. Releasing Heat: TAs the day progresses and either the temperature drops or there is an increased need for warmth in the home, the stored heat is gradually released from the heater.
  4. Thermostat control: Modern electric storage heaters typically come equipped with thermostats, allowing for precise control over the amount of heat released. This feature is key for efficiently warming up homes while also conserving electricity and reducing heating costs. These heaters are generally more energy-efficient compared to other heating options.
  5. Economy 7/ Time-of-use tariffs: Electric storage heaters are often paired with specific electricity tariffs, such as ‘Economy 7’ or similar variations. These tariffs provide electricity at lower rates during off-peak hours when demand is low, and higher rates during peak daytime hours, encouraging electricity use during less busy times.

Who Qualifies For Free Electric Storage Heating In Scotland?

In Scotland, you’ll need to meet certain qualifying criteria to be eligible for free electric storage heaters and systems under the ECO4 scheme. These eligible households and individuals include:

Grant eligibility

To be eligible for this program, you should either own your home or be renting from a private landlord (with their permission). Eligibility extends to households meeting any of the following conditions:

  • Your combined household income is below £31,000 annually.
  • There is a child under five years of age living in the home.
  • A member of your household is over 65 years old and is either vulnerable or dealing with certain health conditions.
  • Your residence is located in an area prone to cold living conditions.
  • For homeowners, your property’s Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating should be between D and G. Renters should have an EPC rating of E, F, or G to qualify.
  • Priority is often given to homes with inefficient heating systems or inadequate cavity wall insulation.

It’s important to note that a necessary assessment will be conducted on all homes to verify if they meet these qualifying criteria.

Qualifying allowances

  • JSA:
    Income-based Job-Seekers Allowance
  • ESA:
    Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

Qualifying benefits

  • Housing benefit
  • Child benefit

Qualifying credits

  • Child Tax Credits (CTC)
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Pension Credit Savings Credit
  • Universal Credit (UC)
  • Working Tax Credits (WTC)

What if you don't qualify for grant funding?

Should you not qualify for the aforementioned benefits but still fulfill specific requirements for grant assistance, you might be eligible under the Government’s ECO Scheme via ECO4 Flex options. These options cover a range of energy efficiency enhancements, including the installation of a new gas boiler, grants for first-time central heating, insulation grants, and grants for electric heaters.

What are the Advantages of Electric Storage Heating?

Electric storage heaters offer a ton of advantages for you and your home. Some of the main benefits of installing electric storage heating in your home include:

  • Cost-effectiveness: These heaters are cost-effective, utilizing lower off-peak electricity rates, resulting in reduced energy bills.
  • Enhanced energy efficient: When used properly, electric storage heaters excel in energy efficiency by storing and gradually releasing heat, thus minimizing constant energy use.
  • No gas dependency: Ideal for homes without gas connections, these heaters are also preferred by those avoiding gas appliances
  • Relative ease of installation: Typically straightforward to install, particularly in homes with existing electrical infrastructure.
  • Low maintenance: Fewer moving parts mean less maintenance and fewer potential issues
  • Reduced carbon footprint: Using these heaters, especially with electricity from renewable sources, can lead to lower carbon emissions.
  • No boiler required: These heaters do not require a boiler, thereby reducing initial installation costs and being beneficial for homes without existing central heating systems.

The time needed for energy efficiency upgrades depends on their type and complexity, as well as the size and layout of the property. Simple upgrades might take a few hours, while more complex installations like ground-source heat pumps can take longer.

Eligible individuals may access free boilers, solar panels, air source heat pumps, and various types of home insulation through the ECO4 grant.
