About the ECO Scheme

Introduced in 2013 and extended until March 2026 with ECO4, the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) Scheme mandates companies in Scotland and the UK to allocate funds for improving energy efficiency in homes.

Under ECO4, grants are available for replacing boilers and upgrading electric heating systems, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and support vulnerable communities.

Do I Qualify
For The Storage Heater Grant?

The ECO4 funding scheme has a set of requirements for those who want to apply for free storage heaters.

Homeowners or tenants can apply for the grant if they receive the following benefits or credit:

  • Jobseekers Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit (Savings Credit or Guarantee Credit)
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credits
  • Working Tax Credit

It is important to note, however, that you do not have to currently be claiming the benefits listed above. You must have claimed these benefits in the year (12 months) prior to the requested installation of a new storage heater.

If none of the household members have availed any of the aforementioned benefits, you might still qualify for a half-price discount on replacing your electric storage heaters, provided you meet other eligibility criteria. An evaluation by a surveyor will be necessary to assess your property’s suitability.

Additional prerequisites for eligibility for the grant comprise:

  • Being the homeowner or the primary tenant renting from a private landlord, with explicit consent from the landlord.
  • Relying on an electric heating system as the primary heat source (e.g., electric panel heaters, radiators, storage heaters).
  • Holding an Energy Performance Certificate rating of E, F, or G.

Council houses and Housing Association properties

Residents of council houses and Housing Association properties may also qualify for a complimentary replacement of storage heaters. However, the criteria for eligibility differ, and it’s advisable to reach out to the housing association directly for details.

Why Are Storage Heaters Problematic?

Before delving into the drawbacks of outdated storage heaters, it’s essential to grasp how these systems operate.

How do storage heaters work?

Electric storage heaters are equipped with heat-absorbing bricks crafted from clay (alternatively, ceramic bricks may be used). These bricks retain heat and release it as needed.

During off-peak hours, typically at night when energy tariffs are lower, an element heats up the bricks. The stored heat is then discharged during the day to warm up the surroundings without requiring additional electricity. This feature proves advantageous as daytime electricity rates are typically higher.

These heaters offer flexibility and efficiency, as they can be installed in various rooms without the need for complex piping or a central heating system like radiators.

Modern storage heaters integrate advanced technologies for enhanced energy efficiency. Various types of contemporary storage heaters include:

  • Fan-assisted storage heaters: These units, eligible under ECO4, function akin to traditional ones by storing heat overnight. During the day, a fan expels cold air from the room through the heater, followed by the release of warm air via a vent. These heaters are equipped with a thermostat for optimal control.
  • Combination convector storage heaters: Another option under the ECO Scheme, these heaters operate similarly to traditional models but feature a convection heater for supplemental warmth.

Of Storage Heaters

Despite advancements in energy efficiency, storage heaters still exhibit some inefficiencies. Nevertheless, for residences lacking access to gas mains, storage heaters remain the sole viable option for maintaining warmth within the home.

Not all heat is stored:

Unfortunately, not 100% of the heat generated during the night is stored and released during the day. This is particularly true for older heater models. That means that the heaters actually need more energy to heat up during the night than what is needed during the day. Convection heaters are able to store and release 100% of the available heat, making them much more efficient.

Electricity is expensive:

Electricity prices are currently three times higher than gas prices per unit of energy (kWh). As a result, it is still very expensive to run an electric storage heater in comparison to gas boilers and central heating.

Lack of temperature control:

Storage heaters – even the modern ones with thermostats – do not offer precision temperature control. Since heat is stored during the night, the heat released the next day may not be enough to keep the home at a comfortable temperature level. This is especially true on very cold days, of course.

The opposite also applies when a balmy day surprises you; the storage heater makes your home unbearably warm during the day.

The Advantages
Of Electric Heating?

Despite some drawbacks associated with electric heating systems, they offer numerous advantages for homeowners in Glenrothes:

Low carbon emissions

Electric heating boasts significantly lower carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels like coal and gas. This eco-friendliness contributes positively to the local environment.

Modern advances

While some may perceive electric heating as outdated compared to alternatives like heat pumps or boilers, ongoing advancements in the industry have made electric heating increasingly energy-efficient.

Safe and no risk to health

Electric heating poses minimal health risks compared to other systems. With no gases to leak and no combustion occurring, there’s no risk of explosions or carbon monoxide poisoning, ensuring a safe environment for households.

Less maintenance

Electric heating systems have fewer components, resulting in lower maintenance requirements compared to other systems. This means less hassle and fewer ongoing costs for homeowners.

Won't be left out in the cold

With fewer maintenance needs, the risk of unexpected breakdowns and repairs is significantly reduced. Homeowners can rely on electric heating systems to provide consistent warmth without sudden interruptions.

Lower installation costs

Electric heaters typically have lower installation costs compared to alternatives like heat pumps or gas boilers. This initial affordability makes them a viable option for budget-conscious homeowners.

Easy to install

Electric storage heaters, with their simple design and lack of moving parts, can be installed quickly and easily. This hassle-free installation process adds to their appeal, especially for those seeking convenience.

Electric storage heaters can be installed in any room without the need for complex piping, offering homeowners flexibility in placement and usage throughout their homes.

Electric heating systems boast high efficiency levels, minimizing heat loss through flues or pipework. Pairing electric heaters with solar PV panels further enhances efficiency while reducing carbon footprint.

Unlike some heating systems that produce loud noises, electric heating systems operate silently. This ensures a peaceful environment without disturbances from clanging pipes or machinery.

Yes, to an extent. Under the ECO4 Scheme, manufacturers must select from approved suppliers such as Creda, Dimplex, Heatstore, and Elnur. Similarly, installers can choose from a list of scheme-approved professionals, ensuring quality service for homeowners.

Installation of electric storage heaters is swift and straightforward. Once eligibility is confirmed, new heaters can be installed within 24 to 72 hours, with the process typically completed within a few hours.

Apart from electric storage heater replacement, the ECO4 Scheme covers various energy-efficient home improvements, including:

  • Replacing old or inefficient boilers
  • Draught proofing
  • Home insulation (including room in roof, underfloor, cavity wall and solid wall insulation)
  • Installation of solar panels and other renewable energy initiatives
  • Replacement of single-glazed windows with double glazing

For each of these grants, certain eligibility criteria will apply under the ECO4 Scheme.

The first step before applying for a free storage heater is to check whether you are eligible to receive the ECO4 grant. This can easily be done by filling in Envirohomes Renewables’ Check Eligibility Form. Thereafter, someone will be in contact to discuss the way forward.

Alternatively, you could also contact Envirohomes Renewables directly on 0141 459 0292.

Yes, as per funding rules, existing storage heaters must be removed when upgrading to new ones under the ECO4 grant. However, other heating systems in the home do not require removal unless they are old and inefficient.

Without a grant, the cost of replacing a storage heater typically ranges from £220 to £350, including the price of the heater itself and installation. However, eligible homeowners can have these costs covered entirely through the ECO4 grant.
