About the ECO Scheme

Introduced in 2013, the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) Scheme has evolved to its latest iteration, ECO4, slated until March 2026, supplanting ECO3 in 2022.

This initiative earmarks funds for qualifying households across Scotland and the UK, aiming to enhance energy efficiency by subsidizing boiler replacements, electric heating system upgrades, and home insulation installations.

At its core, the scheme strives to mitigate carbon emissions, aligning with international commitments to combat climate change while fostering financial relief for low-income families through energy bill reductions.

What is
a Storage Heater Replacement
Grant in Glasgow?

The Storage Heater Replacement Grant in Glasgow offers eligible households the opportunity to bid farewell to outdated electric storage heaters at zero cost.

As an integral component of the ECO4 Scheme, this initiative targets the replacement of faulty or inefficient heaters with contemporary, energy-efficient alternatives.

Beneficiaries stand to gain full coverage for the replacement and installation of their new electric heating systems, presenting a boon for properties devoid of gas mains or central heating infrastructure, such as apartment complexes.

Why apply for the Storage Heater Replacement Grant?

The allure of the Storage Heater Replacement Grant lies in its ability to alleviate the financial burden associated with outdated heating systems.

For many homeowners, the exorbitant costs of operating inefficient heaters pose a significant strain, particularly for those with limited financial resources.

By seizing the opportunity to replace obsolete units with state-of-the-art alternatives, applicants can circumvent hefty expenses incurred in purchasing and installing new heaters, potentially saving hundreds of pounds in the process.

Do I Qualify
For The Storage Heater Grant?

The ECO4 funding scheme has a set of requirements for those who want to apply for free storage heaters.

Homeowners or tenants can apply for the grant if they receive the following benefits or credit:

  • Jobseekers Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit (Savings Credit or Guarantee Credit)
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credits
  • Working Tax Credit

It is important to note, however, that you do not have to currently be claiming the benefits listed above. You must have claimed these benefits in the year (12 months) prior to the requested installation of a new storage heater.

In the event that no household member qualifies for the aforementioned benefits, you might still meet the requirements for a 50% discount on the replacement of your electric storage heater in Glasgow, provided other eligibility standards are fulfilled. An evaluation by a surveyor will be necessary to assess your property.

To qualify for the grant, additional criteria must be met, including:

  • Being the homeowner or primary tenant renting from a private landlord, with explicit consent from the landlord.
  • Utilizing an electric heating system as the primary source of warmth (e.g., electric panel heaters, radiators, storage heaters).
  • Having an Energy Performance Certificate rating of E, F, or G.

Council houses and Housing Association properties

Council properties and those managed by Housing Associations may also qualify for a complimentary storage heater replacement. However, the eligibility criteria differ, and individuals should contact their respective housing associations directly for further information.

Why Are Storage Heaters Problematic?

Before delving into the drawbacks of inefficient storage heaters, it’s essential to grasp how these heating systems operate.

How do storage heaters work?

Electric storage heaters incorporate heat-retaining bricks crafted from clay (alternatively, ceramic bricks can be used). These bricks possess the capability to absorb and retain heat, which can then be discharged when required.

During off-peak hours, typically at night when energy costs are lower, an element heats up the bricks. Subsequently, the stored heat is released throughout the day to warm the home, without the need for electricity during this process. This feature proves beneficial since electricity tariffs are typically higher during daytime hours.

These heaters present a versatile and efficient heating solution, capable of installation in various rooms without the necessity for pipes or a centralized heating system like radiators.

Modern storage heaters incorporate advanced technologies, significantly enhancing energy efficiency. Various types of contemporary storage heaters include:

  • Fan-assisted storage heater: These units can be installed under the ECO4 scheme. Similar to conventional storage heaters, heat is stored overnight. During the day, a fan extracts cold air from the room through the heater, subsequently releasing warm air through a vent. This type of heater operates using a thermostat.
  • Combination convector storage heater: Another option available under the ECO Scheme, these heaters function similarly to traditional models but incorporate a convection heater, offering an alternative heat source or additional warmth.

Of Storage Heaters

Although modern storage heaters have come a long way in terms of energy efficiency, this type of heater remains fairly inefficient. However, for some residences, such as those not connected to gas mains, a storage heater is the only solution for a warm home.

Below are some of the main disadvantages of storage heaters

Not all heat is stored:

Unfortunately, not 100% of the heat generated during the night is stored and released during the day. This is particularly true for older heater models. That means that the heaters actually need more energy to heat up during the night than what is needed during the day. Convection heaters are able to store and release 100% of the available heat, making them much more efficient.

Electricity is expensive:

Electricity prices are currently three times higher than gas prices per unit of energy (kWh). As a result, it is still very expensive to run an electric storage heater in comparison to gas boilers and central heating.

Lack of temperature control:

Storage heaters – even the modern ones with thermostats – do not offer precision temperature control. Since heat is stored during the night, the heat released the next day may not be enough to keep the home at a comfortable temperature level. This is especially true on very cold days, of course.

The opposite also applies when a balmy day surprises you; the storage heater makes your home unbearably warm during the day.

The Advantages
Of Electric Heating?

Despite some potential drawbacks, electric heating systems offer numerous advantages for homeowners in Glasgow:

Low carbon emissions

Electric heating produces fewer carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels like coal and gas, making it a greener option for environmentally-conscious individuals.

Modern advances

Despite perceptions of being outdated, electric heating has evolved with modern advancements, becoming increasingly energy efficient over time.

Safe and no risk to health

Electric heating poses minimal health risks compared to other systems, as it doesn’t involve combustion or gas leaks, eliminating concerns such as explosions or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Less maintenance

With fewer components, electric heating systems require minimal maintenance, reducing the need for frequent repairs and ensuring consistent functionality.

Won't be left out in the cold

While there are initial costs involved, electric heaters generally come with lower installation expenses compared to alternatives like heat pumps or gas boilers.

Lower installation costs

Although there are upfront costs involved, electric heaters are cheaper than heat pumps (£7,000 to £35,000) and gas boilers (£600 to £3,500).

Easy to install

Installation is straightforward and quick since electric heaters have no moving parts and simply need to be connected to the mains.

Electric storage heaters can be installed in any room without the need for complex piping, offering flexibility in placement.

lectric heating systems are highly efficient, with minimal heat loss, especially when combined with solar PV panels for a reduced carbon footprint.

Unlike some heating systems, electric heaters operate silently, providing a peaceful environment without disruptive noises.
