About the ECO Scheme

The Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) Scheme mandates that companies allocate funds towards enhancing energy efficiency nationwide. Under this scheme, eligible households can receive grants to replace outdated storage heaters and enhance their electric heating systems.

Introduced in 2013, the ECO Scheme aims to bolster energy efficiency efforts, with its latest iteration, ECO 4, slated until March 2026. This initiative supersedes its predecessor, ECO 3, as of 2022. By offering grants and funding, the ECO Scheme facilitates the replacement of boilers, electric storage heaters, and the installation of home insulation. Notably, its overarching goal aligns with international commitments to combat climate change by curbing carbon emissions.

What is
a Storage Heater Replacement
Grant in Cumbernauld?

The Storage Heater Replacement Grant in Scotland presents eligible households with the opportunity to replace outdated electric storage heaters at zero cost.

Part of the ECO 4 Scheme, this grant enables the replacement of faulty or inefficient heaters with modern, energy-efficient alternatives.

Covering up to 100% of replacement and installation costs, this grant is particularly beneficial for properties without access to gas mains or central heating systems.

Why apply for the Storage Heater Replacement Grant?

Outdated storage heaters pose significant financial burdens, especially for low-income households.

By leveraging storage heater replacement grants, homeowners can eliminate these inefficiencies and enjoy the benefits of modern heating solutions without the hefty price tag.

By sidestepping the expenses associated with purchasing and installing new heaters, eligible applicants can achieve substantial savings and enhance their home’s energy efficiency.

Do I Qualify
For The Storage Heater Grant?

The ECO4 funding scheme has a set of requirements for those who want to apply for free storage heaters.

Homeowners or tenants can apply for the grant if they receive the following benefits or credit:

  • Jobseekers Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit (Savings Credit or Guarantee Credit)
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credits
  • Working Tax Credit

It is important to note, however, that you do not have to currently be claiming the benefits listed above. You must have claimed these benefits in the year (12 months) prior to the requested installation of a new storage heater.

If none of the household occupants have availed themselves of the aforementioned benefits, you could still qualify for a 50% discount on the replacement of your electric storage heater, provided you meet other eligibility criteria. An assessment by a surveyor will be necessary to evaluate your property.

Additional prerequisites to qualify for the grant include:

  • Being the homeowner or the primary tenant renting from a private landlord, with explicit consent from the landlord.
  • Relying on an electric heating system as the primary source of warmth (e.g., electric panel heaters, radiators, storage heaters).
  • Your home must possess an Energy Performance Certificate rating of E, F, or G.

Council houses and Housing Association properties

Residents of council houses and housing association properties may also qualify for a complimentary replacement of their storage heaters. However, the eligibility criteria differ, and it’s advisable to contact the housing association directly for further information.

Why Are Storage Heaters Problematic?

Before delving into the drawbacks of inefficient storage heaters, it’s essential to grasp how these heating systems operate.

How do storage heaters work?

Electric storage heaters contain heat-retentive bricks typically crafted from clay (though ceramic bricks are also common). These bricks possess the capacity to absorb and retain heat, releasing it when required.

During off-peak hours, electric storage heaters utilize an element to warm up the bricks. This stored heat is then gradually released throughout the day to maintain a comfortable temperature within the home, without the need for additional electricity. This feature is advantageous as electricity tariffs are usually higher during peak hours.

These heaters offer a flexible and efficient heating solution, requiring no installation of pipes or a central heating system like radiators. Modern storage heaters incorporate advanced technologies for improved energy efficiency, and various types are available, including:

  • Fan-assisted storage heaters: These can be integrated as part of the ECO4 scheme. Similar to traditional models, these heaters store heat overnight. During the day, a fan extracts cold air from the room through the heater, while hot air is expelled through a vent. These heaters are equipped with a thermostat for better temperature control.
  • Combination convector storage heaters: Another modern variant eligible for the ECO Scheme, these heaters function similarly to traditional models but also incorporate a convection heater for supplementary warmth.

Disadvantages
Of Storage Heaters

Despite advancements in energy efficiency, storage heaters still possess some inherent inefficiencies. Nevertheless, for residences without access to gas mains, storage heaters may remain the sole viable option for maintaining warmth.

Below are the primary disadvantages associated with storage heaters:

Not all heat is stored:

Unfortunately, not 100% of the heat generated during the night is stored and released during the day. This is particularly true for older heater models. That means that the heaters actually need more energy to heat up during the night than what is needed during the day. Convection heaters are able to store and release 100% of the available heat, making them much more efficient.

Electricity is expensive:

Electricity prices are currently three times higher than gas prices per unit of energy (kWh). As a result, it is still very expensive to run an electric storage heater in comparison to gas boilers and central heating.

Lack of temperature control:

Storage heaters – even the modern ones with thermostats – do not offer precision temperature control. Since heat is stored during the night, the heat released the next day may not be enough to keep the home at a comfortable temperature level. This is especially true on very cold days, of course.

The opposite also applies when a balmy day surprises you; the storage heater makes your home unbearably warm during the day.

The Advantages
