Our team provides comprehensive assistance throughout the funding application process, ensuring seamless access to financial support for eligible households.

Under the Energy Companies Obligation (ECO) Scheme, mandated for companies across Scotland and the UK, funding is earmarked to enhance energy efficiency in homes. One significant aspect of this funding is directed towards replacing outdated storage heaters and upgrading electric heating systems in residential properties.

About the ECO Scheme

The ECO Scheme, introduced in 2013 and currently operating under ECO 4 until March 2026, aims to mitigate carbon emissions in alignment with international commitments while simultaneously alleviating energy costs for low-income households.

By facilitating grants and funding, the scheme aims to encourage the adoption of energy-efficient measures, including the replacement of inefficient heating systems.

What is
a Storage Heater Replacement
Grant in Ayr?

The Storage Heater Replacement Grant in Scotland offers qualifying households the opportunity to replace their electric storage heaters at no cost. This initiative is part of the ECO4 Scheme. Under this program, outdated, inefficient, or faulty electric storage heaters are replaced with modern, energy-efficient alternatives.

Eligible recipients can benefit from up to 100% coverage for both the replacement and installation of the new electric heating system in their homes. This grant is particularly valuable for properties without access to gas mains or lacking a gas central heating system, such as apartment complexes.

Why apply for the Storage Heater Replacement Grant?

Outdated storage heaters can be inefficient and lead to hefty heating expenses for homeowners in Ayr. This financial burden can be particularly challenging for low-income families who struggle to afford such costs. The Storage Heater Replacement Grant offers homeowners the opportunity to replace their inefficient heaters with modern ones at no cost. This initiative alleviates the financial strain associated with purchasing and installing new storage heaters, which can typically amount to around £200 for the unit and an additional £150 for labor. Eligible applicants can bypass these expenses by availing themselves of the grant.

Do I Qualify
For The Storage Heater Grant?

The ECO4 funding scheme has a set of requirements for those who want to apply for free storage heaters.

Homeowners or tenants can apply for the grant if they receive the following benefits or credit:

  • Jobseekers Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension Credit (Savings Credit or Guarantee Credit)
  • Child Tax Credits
  • Universal Credits
  • Working Tax Credit

It is important to note, however, that you do not have to currently be claiming the benefits listed above. You must have claimed these benefits in the year (12 months) prior to the requested installation of a new storage heater.

If none of the occupants in your residence have availed any of the benefits mentioned above, you could still qualify for a 50% discount on the replacement of your electric storage heater, provided you meet other specified criteria. An assessment by a surveyor will be necessary to evaluate your property.

To qualify for the grant, you must meet the following additional requirements:

  1. You must either own the property or be the primary tenant renting from a private landlord, with explicit consent from the landlord.
  2. The primary source of heating in your home must be an electric heating system, such as electric panel heaters, radiators, or storage heaters.
  3. Your property’s Energy Performance Certificate rating must fall within the categories E, F, or G.

Council houses and Housing Association properties

Municipal dwellings and Housing Association accommodations in Ayr offer potential residents the chance to benefit from a complimentary replacement of storage heaters. However, the eligibility criteria vary, necessitating direct contact with the housing association for specific details.

Why Are Storage Heaters Problematic?

Understanding the drawbacks of inefficient storage heaters requires delving into their operational mechanisms.

How do storage heaters work?

Storage heaters, an electric heating option, utilize heat-retaining materials like clay or ceramic bricks. These bricks absorb and retain heat, releasing it when necessary. During off-peak hours when energy costs are lower, an element within the heater warms these bricks. Subsequently, the stored heat is dispensed throughout the day to warm the living space without requiring continuous electricity. This feature is particularly advantageous since daytime electricity rates tend to be higher. These heaters offer versatility and efficiency, capable of installation in various rooms without the need for extensive piping or a centralized radiator system.

Modern iterations of storage heaters integrate advanced technologies for enhanced energy efficiency. Variants include:

Fan-assisted storage heaters: These models, eligible for inclusion in the ECO4 program, operate similarly to traditional ones. Overnight, heat is stored, while during the day, a fan expels cold air from the room through the heater. In turn, warm air is circulated via a vent. This type often incorporates a thermostat for precise temperature control.

Combination convector storage heaters: Also compatible with the ECO Scheme, these heaters function akin to their traditional counterparts but feature an additional convection heater for supplemental warmth or an alternative heat source.

Disadvantages
Of Storage Heaters

While modern advancements have improved the energy efficiency of storage heaters, they still lag behind in terms of effectiveness. However, for households in Ayr not linked to gas lines, storage heaters might be the sole option to ensure warmth during colder months.

Not all heat is stored:

Unfortunately, not 100% of the heat generated during the night is stored and released during the day. This is particularly true for older heater models. That means that the heaters actually need more energy to heat up during the night than what is needed during the day. Convection heaters are able to store and release 100% of the available heat, making them much more efficient.

Electricity is expensive:

Electricity prices are currently three times higher than gas prices per unit of energy (kWh). As a result, it is still very expensive to run an electric storage heater in comparison to gas boilers and central heating.

Lack of temperature control:

Storage heaters – even the modern ones with thermostats – do not offer precision temperature control. Since heat is stored during the night, the heat released the next day may not be enough to keep the home at a comfortable temperature level. This is especially true on very cold days, of course.

The opposite also applies when a balmy day surprises you; the storage heater makes your home unbearably warm during the day.

The Advantages
Of Electric Heating?

Despite the drawbacks associated with storage heaters, electric heating systems offer numerous advantages for Ayr homeowners:

Low carbon emissions

Electric heating boasts a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional fossil fuels like coal and gas, making it an environmentally friendly choice.

Modern advances

Contrary to the belief that electric heating is outdated compared to alternatives like heat pumps or boilers, ongoing advancements in the field have made electric heating remarkably energy-efficient.

Safe and no risk to health

Electric heating poses minimal health risks compared to other heating methods, with no potential for gas leaks, combustion, explosions, or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Less maintenance

With fewer components, electric heating systems require less maintenance, ensuring smoother operation and fewer disruptions for homeowners in Ayr.

Won't be left out in the cold

Electric storage heaters are known for their reliability, with breakdowns being rare due to minimal maintenance requirements. Even if a breakdown occurs, the stored heat ensures continuous warmth for at least a day.

Lower installation costs

Despite initial costs, electric heaters are more economical than heat pumps or gas boilers, making them a cost-effective option for Ayrshire residents.

Easy to install

With no complex piping or moving parts, electric storage heaters can be swiftly and easily installed, requiring only a connection to the electricity mains.

Flexibility

Electric storage heaters can be installed in any room without the need for intricate piping, offering flexibility in heating solutions for Ayrshire homes.

Efficient

Electric heating systems are highly efficient, with minimal heat loss through flues or pipework. Pairing electric heaters with solar PV panels further enhances efficiency and reduces carbon footprint.

Silent

Unlike systems with loud noises or banging pipes, electric heating systems, including storage heaters, operate quietly, ensuring a peaceful environment in Ayr homes.
